The Eure - an utterly authentic department
The Eure has been somewhat overlooked by tourism, with many opting to stay in the coastal area of the region or rushing through towards Paris or towards the Loire valley. And although this is a shame, it has also left the department alone to remain utterly authentic and to glory in its tranquil nature. It has beautiful countryside as well as towns offering history, culture and stunning architecture.
Top 5 things to see and do in the Eure
1. Discover the history and heritage
The towns of the Eure department are a rich source of history and heritage. Evreux, the capital, is architecturally stunning, but it is far from being the only heritage town in Eure. Sightseers will find a choice of fascinating towns to enjoy.
2. The Gardens of Giverny
You don't have to be an artist to fall in love with the works of Claude Monet, one of the best loved of the great Impressionist painters. Visit the famous gardens of Giverny for a chance to see his art come vividly to life.
3. Bec Abbey
The Benedictine Bec Abbey, situated beside the beautiful town of Bec Hellouin, is well worth a visit. Its long and distinguished history together with its links with the Anglican Church and the Archbishop of Canterbury are part of the story, but you can also enjoy taking a look at the speciality of the house, the exquisite pottery produced by the monks.
4. Enjoy the waterways
The waterways of the department offer the chance to get paddling - either by dipping your feet into the water to cool off, or better still, to get out in a canoe. Kids love the fun of canoeing, and it's a great way to tire them out!
5. Walk
This is paradise for walking enthusiasts. Gentle, pretty countryside and a mild climate are just the incentives you need to put on some comfy shoes and get walking. Plenty of exercise during the day sets you up for a calorie laden and delicious dinner with all the best of local ingredients too, all washed down with some potent Normandy cider.
